What is LifeStraw water Bottle?

The LifeStraw water bottle contains a specially designed hollow fibre ultrafiltration technology, most commonly found in industrial water treatment plants that clean a city’s water supply.

The inside of the LifeStraw bottle consists of a vast number of hollow fibres that resemble angel hair spaghetti, but much thinner. Each fibre has pores in its walls with a diameter of 0.2 microns or five hundred times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

When water is forced through LifeStraw filter, which hollow pores, only clean water can pass through these pores. These pores block bacteria, parasites, and dirt from reaching the user. This purely physical method of filtration does not contain any chemicals.

How does a LifeStraw work?

The LifeStraw water bottle incorporates award-winning filter technology into a durable, convenient bottle which filters at least 1,000 litres of water over its lifetime without requiring batteries.

LifeStraw bottle uses advanced microfiltration membrane technology that removes up to 99.9999 percent of bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi) and 99.9 percent of protozoan cysts (e.g., Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia) that produce waterborne diseases.

LifeStraw filter therefore greatly reduces the risk of contracting illnesses such as diarrhoea, dysentery, and Giardia.

When was the LifeStraw invented?

LifeStraw® technology was originally developed in 2005 as an emergency response tool to filter contaminated water following natural disasters and is now used in water filtration products globally. The technology has also been beneficial to people living in developing countries who lack access to safe water.

How to use a LifeStraw water bottle

LifeStraw Go is a personal water filtration tool and should only be used for filtering water.

  • Fill the container with dirty or unfiltered water.
  • Sip filtered water through the straw.
  • After each drinking session, unscrew the lid. Blow air through the LifeStraw® Go to expel dirty water.

The quality of the filtered water is not guaranteed if the product is submitted to conditions other than those encountered during its normal use.

To prevent breakage, do not drop or hit LifeStraw bottle against a hard object. Do not drop the product in polluted water as this might contaminate the membrane. Always keep the mouthpiece cap closed when the product is not in use.

Stop using LifeStraw® if cracks are noted on the main LifeStraw® body and especially on the dark blue bottom part.

How to clean a LifeStraw Bottle

LifeStraw bottle will no longer filter water when the product has reached the end of its working life. Inability to sip water through LifeStraw filter indicates that the product should be replaced.

Rinse the bottle and top cap with safe water before first use. Upon the first use or anytime the filter is dry, fill the bottle with water, screw lid on, and allow to sit for a few minutes to prime the filter. Then take five quick sips to get the water flowing.

When returning from a hiking trip, unscrew the lid, rinse with safe tap water, and let dry before screwing the lid back on and placing it away in storage. Remove the filter before placing the bottle in the dishwasher for cleaning.

LifeStraw rocks. This is a great product. We took this product along with us for our Honeymoon in Kerala and used it between me and my wife all through the tour. It was easy to carry and we were not worried about what kind of water we were drinking. Carrying this around and being able to fill it up was much easier than having bottled water weighing us down. Neither of us got sick and we filled up the bottle in all sorts of places.
